Google doodle: 57th anniversary of invention of the bar code
Users of the internet search engine are being greeted with a bar code in place of the usual Google logo, exactly 57 years after United States inventors Norman Woodland and Bernard Silver were granted a patent.
It follows recent Google doodles in honour of the ancient Chinese philosopher Confucius and Mahatma Gandhi, the father of modern India.
Woodland and Silver, who met while students at the Drexel Institute of Technology in Philadelphia, originally devised a system that would encode data in concentric circles.
The lines of varying width were developed later, partly inspired by Morse code.
According to a Washington Post report, the doodle bar code appears to have been created by encrypting the word ‘Google’ using Code 128, a standard symbology.
The original patent was filed by Woodland and Silver in 1949 and granted on 7 October 1952.
However, bar codes were not used commercially until retailers in the National Association of Food Chains (NAFC) agreed on the familiar Universal Product Code designs that are still seen on billions of worldwide items today.
The first supermarket scanner that could read UPC bar codes was installed at March’s supermarket in Troy, Ohio, in June 1974. The first product to bear the bar code was a packet of Wrigley’s chewing gum.}

South Africans blown away as aliens invade Johannesburg
In the film, a giant spaceship spins past typical alien invasion targets like New York and runs out of energy over Johannesburg.
The creatures onboard -- called "prawns" in a derogatory reference to the aliens' appearance -- become victims of racism and treated with suspicion and contempt in a parable for apartheid.
Lead actor Sharlto Copley said the entire cast and crew were surprised at the film's success, after it opened two weeks ago at the top of the North American box office.
"I guess it's because it's unusual. It's not your typical Hollywood sci-fi film," Copley told AFP.
Directed by South African-Canadian Neill Blomkamp and produced by Oscar-winning "Lord of the Rings" director Peter Jackson, "District 9" was made on a 30 million US dollar budget and netted 37 million dollars on its opening weekend in North America.
The film's success overseas made it front-page news in South Africa. When it finally opened here last weekend, it topped the local box office with two million rands (257,000 dollars, 180,000 euros) in ticket sales.
The title "District 9" is a reference to District 6, an area in Cape Town where more than 60,000 non-whites were evicted under apartheid's policy of forcible racial segregation.
In the movie, District 9 is a township-like settlement where South Africa's government wants to relocate the aliens, hiring a private military company called Multinational United to take charge of the operation.
Trouble starts when corporate bureaucrat Wikus van de Merwe, played by Copley, contracts a mysterious virus that begins to change his DNA.
Many viewers saw parallels to last year's anti-immigrant attacks in South Africa, when 60 people died and tens of thousands fled their homes, but Copley said the allusion was unintentional.
"The xenophobic attacks happened a week after we started shooting, it was not part of the story line. We were concerned that the violence would move to Soweto but it didn't," he said.
Viewers said they were pleased that a movie with a distinctly South African flavour had been received so well overseas -- possibly because the political message is far more subtle than the gruesome violence that inevitably unfolds.
"It's a proudly South African film, it definitely lived up to all the hype," said Sharon Hathway, a 21-year-old university student, as she walked out of a Johannesburg cinema on Saturday.
"I could relate to the story line, especially about xenophobia. It was cleverly done not in your face and in a confrontational way," she said.
Unlike many South African films aimed at an overseas audience, "District 9" has no Hollywood stars, using local actors who performed their scenes largely by improvising without a script.
Actors were given a brief about the scene and they had to come up with the dialogue, Copley said.
"We were not working on a script, most of what is said is in impromptu," he said.
"I didn't do any particular research for the character. I found the accent first and the personality came," said Copley.
That left the film peppered with South African slang, which along with scenes shot mainly in Soweto and Johannesburg's inner city, delighted many viewers here.
"The shacks, the lifestyle, even the dark and dusty atmosphere was real," said Sibahle Manana, 35, an office assistant.
Copley said the film succeeded because it raises questions about how society treats people that are different, an issue confronted in various forms around the world.
"The message of the film is universal, that although we are different we are the same," he said.}

Spy probe images Apollo landing sites
For similar stories, visit the Solar System and Spaceflight Topic Guides
{Those who suspect the Apollo lunar landings were faked may have trouble arguing with new orbital images of hardware and tracks left in the lunar dust by Apollo astronauts in the 1960s and '70s.
The images were taken by NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) less than a month after it launched. "I believe this is the first time Apollo hardware has been imaged by anyone in the post-Apollo era," Richard Vondrak, LRO project scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, told reporters on Friday.
"This is only a first glimpse. These are just the first of many images to be coming ... from now they're only going to be getting better," says Michael Wargo, chief lunar scientist at NASA headquarters in Washington, DC.
Closer and closer
LRO launched on 18 June to serve as NASA's first advance scout in its push to return astronauts to the moon. The probe will examine potential landing sites, look for evidence of water ice, and test the effects of space radiation on simulated human tissue.
LRO currently orbits the moon in a long ellipse around the poles, passing over the lunar south pole at a distance of about 30 kilometres and passing 200 km above the north pole. Once its instruments are calibrated, LRO will fire its thrusters and enter a circular orbit about 50 km above the lunar surface.
The closest LRO came to the lunar surface while producing these images was 100 km, which it did while snapping photos of the Apollo 16 landing site.
But the resolution of future images should improve by at least a factor of two as the probe's orbit changes, Mark Robinson of Arizona State University in Tempe told reporters on Friday. Robinson is the chief scientist for the probe's camera.
No flag
Still, even future images are unlikely to be sharp enough to reveal whether the American flag planted during the Apollo 11 mission is still standing.
But the first batch of images clearly shows the lunar modules, which brought the astronauts down to the surface, from five of the six Apollo lunar landings (the other lander, from the Apollo 12 mission, is expected to be imaged in the near future). Shadows from the modules, which each measure roughly 4 metres across, can also be seen.
The picture of the Apollo 14 site also shows a footpath taken by astronauts as they travelled between the landing site and an experiments package set up more than 100 metres away (see their trek superimposed on a map of London).
LRO's images of the Apollo sites should serve as more than just pretty pictures, Robinson said. Watching the tracks disappear over time could reveal the extent of electrical activity on the surface that can cause dust to levitate, a consideration for engineers designing lunar outposts, since the dust may affect astronauts' health.
Counting craters formed since the Apollo visits could also reveal more about the frequency of impacts on the moon.

Moon landing tapes got erased, NASA admits
By Maggie Fox, Health and Science Editor
{WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The original recordings of the first humans landing on the moon 40 years ago were erased and re-used, but newly restored copies of the original broadcast look even better, NASA officials said on Thursday.
NASA released the first glimpses of a complete digital make-over of the original landing footage that clarifies the blurry and grainy images of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walking on the surface of the moon.
The full set of recordings, being cleaned up by Burbank, California-based Lowry Digital, will be released in September. The preview is available at http://www.nasa.gov.
NASA admitted in 2006 that no one could find the original video recordings of the July 20, 1969, landing.
Since then, Richard Nafzger, an engineer at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland, who oversaw television processing at the ground-tracking sites during the Apollo 11 mission, has been looking for them.
The good news is he found where they went. The bad news is they were part of a batch of 200,000 tapes that were degaussed -- magnetically erased -- and re-used to save money.
"The goal was live TV," Nafzger told a news conference.
"We should have had a historian running around saying 'I don't care if you are ever going to use them -- we are going to keep them'," he said.
They found good copies in the archives of CBS news and some recordings called kinescopes found in film vaults at Johnson Space Center.
Lowry, best known for restoring old Hollywood films, has been digitizing these along with some other bits and pieces to make a new rendering of the original landing.
Nafzger does not worry that using a Hollywood-based company might fuel the fire of conspiracy theorists who believe the entire lunar program that landed people on the moon six times between 1969 and 1972 was staged on a movie set or secret military base.
"This company is restoring historic video. It mattered not to me where the company was from," Nafzger said.
"The conspiracy theorists are going to believe what they are going to believe," added Lowry Digital Chief Operating Officer Mike Inchalik.
And there may be some unofficial copies of the original broadcast out there somewhere that were taken from a NASA video switching center in Sydney, Australia, the space agency said. Nafzger said someone else in Sydney made recordings too.
"These tapes are not in the system," Nafzger said. "We are certainly open to finding them."}

{LONDON (Reuters) - The wife of the new head of Britain's spy agency has posted pictures of her husband, family and friends on Internet networking site Facebook, details which could compromise security, a newspaper said on Sunday.
Sir John Sawers is due to take over as head of the Secret Intelligence Service in November. The SIS, popularly known as MI6, is Britain's global intelligence-gathering organization.
In what the Mail on Sunday called an "extraordinary lapse," the new spy chief's wife, Lady Shelley Sawers, posted family pictures and exposed details of where the couple live and take their holidays and who their friends and relatives are.
The details could be viewed by any of the many millions of Facebook users around the world, but were swiftly removed once authorities were alerted by the newspaper's enquiries.
"There were fears that the hugely embarrassing blunder could have compromised the safety of Sir John's family and friends," the newspaper said.
Publishing the story on its front page and the pictures on a double-page spread, the Mail on Sunday said the information "could potentially be useful to hostile foreign powers or terrorists."
It was the latest in a string of security blunders, lapses and leaks by British officials that have embarrassed the government of embattled Prime Minister Gordon Brown.}

U.S. prosecutors ask judge to imprison Madoff for life
By Grant McCool
{NEW YORK (Reuters) - Swindler Bernard Madoff should spend the rest of his life in prison, U.S. prosecutors argued on Friday, citing the "unique scope and duration" of his crimes as the leader of Wall Street's biggest fraud.
Madoff will be sentenced on Monday after pleading guilty in March to 11 criminal charges including securities fraud, money laundering and perjury in an investment scheme involving tens of billions of dollars.
"Madoff's crimes were of extraordinary dimensions," the prosecutors' memorandum to a Manhattan federal court judge said. "For example, the fraud loss known to date, which is greater than $13 billion, is more than 32 times the baseline level that would carry a sentence of life under the U.S. sentencing guidelines."
It said about $170 billion flowed into the principal account used by Madoff in his decades-long scheme. It said he bilked thousands of people and caused economic hardship to individuals, charities and for-profit institutions.
"A reasonable sentence in this case would be the guidelines sentence of 150 years, or alternatively, a term of years that both would assure that Madoff will remain in prison for life, and forcefully would promote general deterrence."
The uncovering of the scheme and Madoff's arrest in December led to calls for stricter oversight of firms.
Madoff's lawyer Ira Lee Sorkin declined to comment on the memorandum because he said he had not yet read it.
The government argued that the Madoff case bore no comparison to corporate frauds of recent years such as WorldCom Chief Executive Bernie Ebbers and Adelphia's John and Timothy Rigas. Ebbers is serving 25 years and the Rigases 12 years and 17 years, respectively.
"Madoff's conduct is unique in its scope and duration," the memorandum to U.S. District Court Judge Denny Chin said.
It also cited a June 25 letter from counsel for the trustee winding down Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC saying that Madoff had not cooperated.
"Mr. Madoff has not provided meaningful cooperation or assistance to the Trustee since his arrest," the letter signed by lawyer David Sheehan said.
Madoff's lawyer, in papers submitted to the judge this week, argued a sentence of 12 years would be sufficient. Sorkin also asked the judge not to give in to the "mob vengeance" sought by those Madoff defrauded.
Sorkin cited a recent meeting between the jailed Madoff and the inspector general of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission as being helpful to regulators. But prosecutors said on Friday the official "had informed the government that Madoff's information will not 'shape and fortify the future of Wall Street regulation and oversight.'"
The government said statements sent to the court by defrauded investors, showed he "was not only responsible for wiping away the financial resources of many generations within families but also for causing profound levels of stress and emotional injury."
In its memorandum on Friday and in other court papers, prosecutors said that as of November last year, Madoff's firm issued account statements that held a total of about $65 billion when in fact he had not bought any securities.
Madoff and his wife Ruth have agreed to the sale of three of their luxury properties and other assets and valuables, according to court documents filed separately on Friday.
The properties to be sold include the couple's $7 million apartment and primary residence in Manhattan, an $11 million house in Palm Beach, Florida and a $3 million home in Montauk on New York's Long Island. The Florida property and several vessels have already been seized by U.S. Marshals.
The case is USA v Madoff 09-213 in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York (Manhattan).

Invisibility cloak could hide buildings from quakes
{Borrowing from the physics of invisibility cloaks could make it possible to hide buildings from the devastating effects of earthquakes, say physicists in France and the UK.
The "earthquake cloak" idea comes from the team led by Stefan Enoch at the Fresnel Institute in Marseille, France. They were the first to show that the physics of invisibility cloaks could have other applications – designing a cloak that could render objects "invisible" to destructive storm waves or tsunamis.
The seismic waves of an earthquake fall into two main groups: body waves that propagate through the Earth, and surface waves that travel only across the surface.
Although Enoch's team have calculated that controlling body waves would be too complex, controlling surface waves is within the ability of conventional engineering, they say. Fortunately, it is surface waves that are more destructive, says team member Sebastien Guenneau at the University of Liverpool in the UK.
Tuned rings
The new theoretical cloak comprises a number of large, concentric rings made of plastic fixed to the Earth's surface. The stiffness and elasticity of the rings must be precisely controlled to ensure that any surface waves pass smoothly into the material, rather than reflecting or scattering at the material's surface.
When waves travel through the cloak they are compressed into tiny fluctuations in pressure and density that travel along the fastest path available. By tuning the cloak's properties, that path can be made to be an arc that directs surface waves away from an area inside the cloak. When the waves exit the cloak, they return to their previous, larger size.
Unlike some of the optical invisibility cloaks that have been studied in physics labs in recent years, the new cloak is "broadband", meaning that it can divert waves across a range of frequencies.
This is made possible by tuning different rings of the cloak to incoming waves of different frequencies. Waves pass largely unaffected through rings not tuned to their frequency.
"The outer rings remain nearly still, but the pair of rings tuned to the frequency of the wave move like crazy, bending up and down and twisting," says Guenneau. "For each small frequency range, there's one pair of rings that does most of the work." The team has simulated cloaks containing as many as 100 rings, says Guenneau, although fewer would be needed to protect against the most common kinds of earthquake surface waves.
Sound foundations
When it comes to installing them into buildings, they could be built into the foundations, Guenneau suggests. It should be possible to make concrete structures with the right properties. To protect a building 10 metres across, each ring would have to be about 1 to 10 metres in diameter and 10 centimetres thick.
The concentric ring design can also be scaled down, and could offer a way to control vibration in cars or other machinery, he adds.
Work remains to be done to replicate the theoretical results experimentally, says physicist Ulf Leonhardt at the University of St Andrews, UK, who was not involved in the study. But it is possible that invisibility physics may see its first real world applications of in guiding seismic or ocean waves rather than to manipulate light, he told New Scientist.
"I think this is fantastic – I really like taking ideas that have emerged from optics and using them in other applications."}

Bertil Lintner reveals how North Korea has been secretly helping Burma to build an extensive tunnel network as emergency shelter and for other unknown purposes. Lintner has obtained the first-ever images of this secret tunnel building effort along with photos of foreign advisers, almost certainly from North Korea. Payments are made in gold or barter, any store of value North Korea can use.Missiles and missile and nuclear technology, counterfeiting money and cigarette smuggling, front companies and restaurants in foreign countries, labor export to the Middle East - North Korea has been very innovative when it comes to raising badly needed foreign exchange for the regime in Pyongyang.But there is a less known trade in service that the North Koreans have offered to its foreign clients: expertise in tunneling. A fascinating new glimpse of this business has now been offered in secret photos from Burma obtained by this correspondent.The photos, taken between 2003 and 2006, show that while the rest of the world is speculating about the outcome of long-awaited elections in Burma, the ruling military junta has been busy digging in for the long haul - literally. North Korean technicians have helped them construct underground facilities where they can survive any threats from their own people as well as the outside world. It is not known if the tunnels are linked to Burma's reported efforts to develop nuclear technology - in which the North Koreans allegedly are active as well.The photographs show that an extensive network of underground installations was built near Burma's new, fortified capital Naypyidaw. In November 2005, the military moved its administration from the old capital Rangoon to an entirely new site that was carved out of the wilderness 460 kms north of Rangoon.Meaning the "Abode of Kings," Naypyidaw is meant to symbolize the power of the military and its desire to build a new state based on the tradition of Burma's pre-colonial warrior kings. But underground facilities were apparently deemed necessary to secure the military's grip on power. Additional tunnels and underground meeting halls have been built near Taunggyi, the capital of Burma's northeastern Shan State and the home of several of the country's decades-long insurgencies. Some of the pictures, taken in June 2006, show a group of technicians in civilian dress walking out of a government guesthouse in the Naypyidaw area. Asian diplomats have identified those technicians, with features distinct from the Burmese workers around them, as North Koreans.This is quite a turnaround as Burma severed relations with Pyongyang in 1983 after North Korean agents planted a bomb at Rangoon's Martyrs Mausoleum killing 18 visiting South Korean officials, including the then-deputy prime minister and three other government ministers.Secret talks between Burmese and North Korean diplomats began in Bangkok in the early 1990s.The two sides had discovered that despite the hostile act in the previous decade they had a lot in common. Both had come under unprecedented international condemnation, especially by the US, because of their blatant disregard for the most basic human rights and Pyongyang for its nuclear weapons program. Burma also needed more military hardware to suppress an increasingly rebellious urban population as well as ethnic rebels in the frontier areas. North Korea needed food, rubber and other essentials - and was willing to accept barter deals, which suited the cash-strapped Burmese generals."They have both drawn their wagons in a circle ready to defend themselves," a Bangkok-based Western diplomat said. "Burma's generals admire the North Koreans for standing up to the United States and wish they could do the same."After an exchange of secret visits, North Korean armaments began to arrive in Burma. The curious relationship between Burma and North Korea was first disclosed in the Hong Kong-based weekly Far Eastern Economic Review on July 10, 2003. A group of 15 to-20 North Korean technicians were then seen at a government guesthouse near the old capital Rangoon. The report was met with skepticism, especially because of the 1983 Rangoon bombings. But, when North Korean-made field artillery pieces were seen in Burma in the early 2000s, it became clear that North Korea had found a new ally ― several years before diplomatic relations between the two countries were restored in April 2007."While based on a 1950s Russian design, these weapons [the field guns] were battle-tested and reliable," Australian Burma scholar Andrew Selth stated in a 2004 working paper for the Australian National University. "They significantly increased Burma's long-range artillery capabilities, which were then very weak."Since then, Burma has also taken delivery of North Korean truck-mounted, multiple rocket launchers and possibly also surface-to-air missiles for its Chinese-supplied naval vessels.Then came the tunneling experts. Most of Pyongyang's own defense industries, including its chemical and biological-weapons programs, and many other military as well as government installations are underground. This includes known factories at Ganggye and Sakchu, where thousands of technicians and workers labor in a maze of tunnels dug under mountains. The export of such know-how to Burma was first documented in June 2006, when intelligence agencies intercepted a message from Naypyidaw confirming the arrival of a group of North Korean tunneling experts at the site.Today, three years later, the dates on the photos published today confirm the accuracy of this report. By now, the tunnels and underground installations should be completed, as would those near Taunggyi. This well-hidden complex ensures there is no danger of irate civilians storming government buildings, as they did during the massive pro-democracy uprising in August-September 1988. Sources say that the internationally isolated military junta may also consider these deep bunkers as their last repair in case of air strikes of the kind that the Taliban in Afghanistan or Saddam Hussein regime in Iraq endured.It is not clear how much, or what, Burma has paid for the assistance provided by the North Korean experts, but it could be food ― or gold, which is found in riverbeds in northern Burma. Or some other mineral.Burma, of course, is not the only foreign tunneling venture by North Korea. In southern Lebanon following the 2006 war, Israel's Defense Forces and the United Nations found several of the underground complexes, which by then had been abandoned by Hezbollah militants. By coincidence or not, these tunnels and underground rooms - some big enough for meetings to be held there ― are strikingly similar to those the South Koreans have unearthed under the Demilitarized Zone that separates South from North Korea.Under small, manhole cover-sized entrances hidden under grass and bushes were steel-lined shafts with ladders leading down to big rooms with electricity, ventilation, bathrooms with showers and drainage systems. Some of the tunnels are 40 meters deep and located only 100 meters from the Israeli border. North Korea's possible involvement in digging these tunnels is however, difficult to ascertain.According to Israeli investigative journalist Ronen Bergman, a senior officer in the Iranian Revolutionary Guards who had defected to the West revealed that, "thanks to the presence of hundreds of Iranian engineers and technicians, and experts from North Korea who were brought in by Iranian diplomats…Hezbollah succeeded in building a 25-kilometer subterranean strip in South Lebanon."Beirut sources suggest that it is more likely that Hezbollah has used North Korean designs and blueprints given to them by their Syrian or Iranian allies - both of whom are close to the North Koreans. (Both Iran and Syria have acquired missile technology from North Korea, and what was believed to be a secret nuclear reactor in Syria built with North Korean help was destroyed by the Israeli air force in September 2007.) Either way, North Korean expertise in tunneling has become a valuable commodity for export. And Pyongyang is flexible about the method of payment as long as it helps the international pariah regime.Bertil Lintner is a Swedish journalist based in Thailand and the author of several works on Asia, including "Blood Brothers: The Criminal Underworld of Asia" and "Great Leader, Dear Leader: Demystifying North Korea under the Kim Clan." Docu exposes disturbing truth about U.S. food supply
By Kirk Honeycutt
{LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - In 1906, Upton Sinclair published his muckraking novel "The Jungle," which exposed corruption, unsanitary conditions and horrifying labor practices in the U.S. meatpacking business. The book caused a sensation that brought about a huge public outcry and considerable reform. More than a century later, "Food,_Inc.," a documentary from director-producer Robert Kenner and investigative journalist Eric Schlosser ("Fast_Food_Nation"), might be "The Jungle" for the 21st century. Things, it seems, have gotten worse in our food supply.
No question, watching this film is a tough go. Horror films cause less seat-squirming. The challenge faced by Magnolia Pictures is how to bring in the unconverted, meaning those who pooh-pooh the notion that what they eat could possibly be unsafe. Making the film available across several platforms should deliver not only greater returns but a better-educated public that can vote for greater food safety by the way they shop for food.
Several films, including "Food_Fight" and "Fast Food Nation," have explored many of these themes. But none engenders the sense of urgency -- and anger -- that "Food, Inc." does. The main villain is agribusiness, a multicorporation behemoth that controls virtually everything you eat.
The film, like Sinclair's novel, is an unapologetic exercise in advocacy journalism. However, lest anyone accuse the filmmakers of unfairness, representatives of the_Corporations that control our food supply were offered time to explain their approach to food safety. Everyone proved camera shy. Worse, the corporations pressured farmers not to give interviews or allow cameras inside food factories. Conditions are that bad.
But one chicken farmer did cooperate. And hidden cameras got inside a "factory farm." Don't schedule dinner after seeing this film.
Guided by Schlosser -- who appears on camera, as does fellow food journalist Michael Pollan ("The Omnivore's Dilemma") -- the film explores how food has changed more in a half-century "than in the previous 10,000 years." Despite the farm images that appear on packaged foods, a handful of corporations, not farmers, control our food supply. Governmental regulatory agencies charged with overseeing food safety essentially are toothless because most of the administrators are former -- or future -- food company executives.
Here is what results: Cattle are fed corn rather than grass because it's cheaper. This has produced new strains of E. coli virus that have stricken thousands and killed hundreds. The processing of animals -- an often cruel process for animals and humans alike -- admits far too many contaminants into the meat supply.
Government policy favors subsidies for the "wrong calories" in our diet. This has led to epidemics in obesity and diabetes. Because of these policies, the cost of many foods is actually down -- but at the hidden cost of increased medical expenses. Don't flatter yourself if you don't eat fast food: The "system" reaches into everything you eat.
Kenner takes you through these unsettling stories through a mix of articulate talking heads, cameras peering where Food Inc. doesn't want scrutiny, citizens lobbying their representatives in Congress and entertaining graphics and animation. It's Michael Moore without the self-aggrandizing hyperbole.
What it's not, though, is discouraging: The film ends by asking people to shop wisely, to support farmers' markets and food produced by organic or sustainable farming methods. If Wal-Mart can change its products and policies because of customer demand, every one of those Food Inc. companies can do likewise.}

Greenland Ice Sheet Melting Faster Than Expected
ScienceDaily (June 13, 2009) — The Greenland ice sheet is melting faster than expected, according to a new study led by a University of Alaska Fairbanks researcher and published in the journal Hydrological Processes.
Study results indicate that the ice sheet may be responsible for nearly 25 percent of global sea rise in the past 13 years. The study also shows that seas now are rising by more than 3 millimeters a year--more than 50 percent faster than the average for the 20th century.
UAF researcher Sebastian H. Mernild and colleagues from the United States, United Kingdom and Denmark discovered that from 1995 to 2007, overall precipitation on the ice sheet decreased while surface ablation--the combination of evaporation, melting and calving of the ice sheet--increased. According to Mernild’s new data, since 1995 the ice sheet lost an average of 265 cubic kilometers per year, which has contributed to about 0.7 millimeters per year in global sea level rise. These figures do not include thermal expansion--the expansion of the ice volume in response to heat--so the contribution could be up to twice that.
The Greenland ice sheet has been of considerable interest to researchers over the last few years as one of the major indicators of climate change. In late 2000/early 2001 and in 2007, major glacier calving events sent up to 44 square miles of ice into the sea at a time. Researchers are studying these major events as well as the less dramatic ongoing melting of the ice sheet through runoff and surface processes.
Ice melt from a warming Arctic has two major effects on the ocean. First, increased water contributes to global sea-level rise, which in turn affects coastlines across the globe. Second, fresh water from melting ice changes the salinity of the world’s oceans, which can affect ocean ecosystems and deep water mixing.
“Increasing sea level rise will be a problem in the future for people living in coastal regions around the globe,” said Mernild. “Even a small sea level rise can be a problem for these communities. It is our hope that this research can provide people with accurate information needed to plan for protecting people and communities.” http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/06/090612092741.htm

Police to probe missing gold at mint
{OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canadian police will investigate why the Royal Canadian Mint seems to have lost some of its gold and other precious metals, the government said on Tuesday.
Media reports say more than C$10 million ($9.1 million) in gold and other assets are missing. Ottawa acted after it learned that an independent audit of the mint was not going to be able to solve the mystery.
"I have instructed the mint to call in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to (do) a full investigation," junior government minister Rob Merrifield told reporters, declining to say how much was missing.
Opposition politicians said the incident showed the minority Conservative government was hopelessly incompetent.
"If they can't even hold on to the gold in the mint, what are they capable of doing?" asked New Democrat legislator Thomas Mulcair.
The mint says its plant in Winnipeg, Manitoba, produces over one billion circulation coins each year. It also says its vaults are "an exceptionally secure facility."}

Antarctic land mass may look like parts of Europe
Last Updated: Wednesday, June 3, 2009 3:30 PM CT
{It's buried under a massive continent-wide ice sheet, but the topography of the land in Antarctica might bear some resemblance to parts of modern-day Europe, new research suggests.
According to a paper in the June 4 issue of the scientific journal Nature, the continent might have a similar feel and formation pattern to that found in the European Alps, with river valleys cutting through mountains over the course of millennia, before being widened and deepened by glaciers.
Using new radar data compiled by Chinese researchers between 2004 and 2008, the paper's lead author, Martin Siegert at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, suggests that Antarctica shows signs of detailed river systems that have been around from the time the region had an average summer temperature of roughly 3 degrees Celsius and even supported tree life.
"The landscape has relief similar to the European Alps," he wrote, "[But] the largest valley revealed by our survey is broader than valleys of similar drainage area in the Alps and other glaciated terrains."
Scientists have long theorized that the ice sheet that now covers the continent came about due to sudden, drastic climate change at the end of the Eocene Era roughly 34 million years ago, but the specifics of how it happened remain something of a mystery.
The new research focuses on the Gamburtsev mountain range toward the center of the continent. Ranges like it are where scientists believe the antarctic ice sheet originally formed.
The only previous survey of the Gamburtsev region consisted of radar acquired from a single airplane survey done in the 1970s. Looking at the new Chinese data, Siegert theorizes that the land is covered in river valleys and mountains — some of which are more than 2,400 meters tall but still buried under thousands of meters of ice.
"The topography revealed beneath the ice is striking … [because] ice cannot create such networks alone," he wrote, adding that topography only takes that form when ice takes advantage of pre-existing river systems.
The report's authors conclude that the lay of the land has probably been perfectly preserved beneath the present ice sheet for at least the last 14 million years.}

Hugh Laurie's death pact before he turned 40.
By Bang
{Hugh Laurie planned to kill himself before he turned 40.
The 'House' actor - who celebrates his 50th birthday in a few weeks time - and his school friends made a pact to take their own lives because they thought they would have achieved everything by that age.
He said: "I remember I made a pact with some friends when we were 18 that we'd kill ourselves before we got to 40. It just seemed such a ludicrously distant prospect. I think I'd say that you'll never think you know more or feel more acutely or have any clearer an insight into existence than you do right now."
Despite failing to go through with the suicide pact, Hugh admits his life hasn't turned out the way he thought it would.
He added to Britain's Seven magazine: "From now on it's a gradually descending mist of confusion and doubt. I've never known less than I know now. You hope that your teenage self would like and forgive your 50-year-old self. It would be awful to think that they'd be ashamed and appalled - that you were a betrayal of everything they thought they'd become."}

Australia's oldest man, last WWI veteran dies
Wed Jun 3, 2009
{SYDNEY (AFP) - Australia's oldest man and its last surviving veteran of World War I died on Wednesday at the age of 110.
Jack Ross, who joined the Australian Imperial Force in the last months of World War I 91 years ago, died in his sleep in a nursing home in the southern country town of Bendigo, the Golden Oaks Nursing Home said.
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd honoured one of the last remaining veterans of the first global conflict.
"Today we mourn the death of Jack Ross, I ask that we also reflect on the service and sacrifice of the 417,000 Australians who served our nation during the First World War and the 61,000 who gave their lives," he told parliament.
"We will continue to remember and to honour their legacy," Rudd added.
Ross, who was born in 1899, enlisted in the Australian military that fought with British forces in January 1918 and was trained in the use of radio before being assigned to the 1st Battalion in his native Victoria state.
But the Great War drew to an end in November of the same year and Ross was demobilised before being posted overseas.
In 1919, Ross joined the railways, where he would work for 45 years, but served the Australian military again in World War II as a member of the volunteer defence corps. He retired from the railways in 1964.
The teetotaller and non-smoker was active until a few years ago and attended the annual Anzac Day parade that honours Australia's contribution to conflicts starting with World War I until 2005 when he became too frail.
"It's always a very sad time for him," his daughter Peggy Ashburn said of the Anzac Day holiday in which Australia's contribution to the British-led assault on the Turkish stronghold of Gallipoli is singled out for recognition.
"He would like to (have been) in the march but there is no way he can do it," she said.
Ross, known as "Pop" to family and friends, celebrated his 110th birthday in March with chocolates and cake and a congratulatory letter from Rudd.
Ross was one of only a handful of remaining soldiers in the world who served during the Great War. Only three British World War I soldiers are still alive.
"Australia owes so much to this brave war generation," Rudd told parliament on Wednesday.}

{PARIS (AFP) - Actor Lucy Gordon, an up-and-coming talent who played a role in Spider-Man 3 and will soon appear as Jane Birkin in a Serge Gainsbourg biopic, has killed herself in Paris, her agent said.
The 29-year-old died on Wednesday, Gordon's representative Elisabeth Simpson said in a statement. According to press reports in Paris and London she hanged herself in a flat she shared with a boyfriend, who raised the alarm.
Selected scenes from Gordon's latest movie, "Gainsbourg: Heroic Life", have been played this week at the Cannes Film Festival and she was seen in the film industry as a possible future star.
"The film owes a lot to the generous spirit, to the kindess and immense talent of Lucy Gordon," director Joann Sfar and producers Marc du Pontavice and Didier Lupfer said in a statement.
Gordon lived in France, where she was best known for her breakthrough role in Cedric Klapisch's romantic comedy "Poupees Russes" (Russian Dolls).}

Ledger's last performance hits screen in Cannes
Fri May 22
{By Mike Collett-White CANNES, France (Reuters) - Australian actor Heath Ledger's final performance before he died of an accidental overdose in January 2008 nearly never made it to the big screen, U.S.-born director Terry Gilliam said on Friday.
The film maker's first thought when Ledger died in New York was to ditch "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus," which was only half finished.
But encouraged by people around him to continue, and helped by actors Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell who played Ledger's character in three separate dream sequences, Gilliam eventually completed the movie.
"The choice I made was to close the film down," Gilliam told reporters at the Cannes film festival, where the out-of-competition movie has its world premiere.
"I couldn't see how we could finish it without Heath because we were in the middle of production. "Fortunately, I was surrounded by really good people who insisted that I shouldn't be such a lazy bastard and I'd better go out and find a way of finishing the film for Heath.
"That's what we did."
Gilliam decided to use three actors rather than one to complete the role of Tony, made possible because they appear in a land of the imagination entered through a magic mirror.
"I started calling friends -- Johnny Depp, and he said 'I'm there'. And I basically was just calling people who knew and loved Heath.
"Everyone in the cast and everyone in the crew was determined that this film would be finished and everybody worked longer, harder and somehow we got through. It was really ... people's love for Heath that propelled this thing forward."
ENERGY AND AD-LIBBING
Gilliam praised Ledger, who won a posthumous Oscar for his performance as the Joker in Batman blockbuster "The Dark Knight," for his enthusiasm and energy on set.
"Heath was enjoying himself so much and he was ad libbing a lot which I don't really allow that much ... in my films. He got everybody else going. Everybody was just energized by Heath, he was extraordinary, he was almost exhausting."
Ledger plays Tony, who is found hanging from a bridge in London but is revived by Anton and Valentina, members of a horse-drawn traveling theater which has the power to allow people to walk into a world of their dreams.
Christopher Plummer stars as Doctor Parnassus, an man who has lived for centuries after making a pact with the devil, performed by Tom Waits.
The devil plans to take away his daughter Valentina when she turns 16, but gives Parnassus one last chance to save her.
The action moves from the streets of London and inside the rickety old wagon to fantastical, special effects-laden landscapes that represent people's imaginations.
"I just know that story telling and the restructuring of the world through stories is vital," Gilliam said. "What I'm talking about is using one's imagination to expand the possibilities and the view of the world people have."
Ledger's family, who Gilliam said supported him completing the film, have yet to see it.
"What was important for me was just to make a film with Heath's last performance up there alive and well, and I think they're going to be delighted by it."

Homeless Korean dies with 100,000 dollars in bank
Tue May 5, 2009
{SEOUL (AFP) - A homeless South Korean unable to withdraw his life savings because he could not remember his real name has died in poverty, officials said.
The man, believed to be aged 56, died of cancer last month, leaving 128 million won (just over 100,000 dollars) in a bank account that was opened in early 1993 under the alias of Na Hae-Dong.
The account was frozen several months later when a law took effect to ban accounts held under false names, as an anti-corruption measure.
Deposits were still allowed but the account holder had to register a real name to withdraw money, something "Na" could not do.
"He didn't know what his real name was or where he was born. We tried but failed to identify him," Yoo Joon-Soo, the senior official of Yongbong district in the southwestern city of Gwangju, told AFP by phone.
The man collected scrap iron and other junk and slept on his cart under plastic sheets before moving in 2007 into a makeshift shelter made from a shipping container.
Though he could not withdraw from the account, he kept putting in savings.
"He used to say he wanted to buy a home with his savings," Yoo said.
"Last month, we applied for court approval to create his new ID and the court procedure was under way."
A local court is expected to order that the savings revert to the state, he added.}

Did the Columbine killers plan to hit NYC?
They wanted to kill 5oo people, hijack a plane and crash it into New York City, Jefferson County Sherrif department's spokesman, Steve Davis, told reporters.}

World: Americas
Columbine killers planned to kill 500
Investigators say the two students responsible for the Columbine High School massacre planned to murder 500 people and create destruction far beyond the Colorado suburb where they ran amok last Tuesday.
The latest revelations about the teenage killers Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris came as more funerals of their victims took place, including that of the teacher hailed as a hero for his role in directing students to safety.
From the boy's diaries and the taunts they shouted as they attacked fellow students, the pair apparently carried out the shootings in revenge for insults from classmates who they said had made them outcasts.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/324995.stm
But the authorities now say the diaries indicate the two teenagers planned even more destruction, both within the town and beyond.
They wanted to kill 500 people, hijack a plane and crash it into New York City, Jefferson County Sherrif department's spokesman, Steve Davis, told reporters.
Mr Davis said the diary had been found in Harris' bedroom alongside bomb- making materials and other weapons.
It also notes how the massacre had been a year in the planning and timed to coincide with Hitler's birthday.
Amazed at the firepower Harris and Klebold had managed to accumulate, investigators say they suspect that others may have been involved or at least known what they were planning.
Police questioned Klebold's 18-year-old girlfriend about whether she purchased two of the firearms used in the shootings.
Officials said the woman had not been named as a suspect and no arrests were imminent.
Funeral of a hero
William "Dave" Sanders, a computer teacher and popular sports coach at the school, was gunned down as two students shot their way through the school building before finally turning their guns on themselves.
Terrified pupils later said many of them owed their lives to Mr Sanders' quick thinking.
More than 2,000 people crowded into and around Littleton's Trinity Christian Center for Monday's funeral. A memorial service held in the town on Sunday was attended by more than 70,000 mourners including US Vice-President Al Gore.
"He was and always will be a hero in my heart," his niece, Kim, told mourners.
Mourners gathered at three other services on Monday. About 2,000 people attended the funeral of Cassie Bernall, 17, the girl who answered "yes" when asked by one of the gunmen if she believed in God. The gunman then shot her dead.
"Cassie's response does not surprise us," the family said in a statement released at the funeral. "Her life was rightly centered around our lord Jesus."
About 700 people heard Lauren Townsend described as "remarkable girl" by her family.
Miss Townsend, 18, was captain of the girls' volleyball team and an honor student.
Daniel Rohrbough, 15, was killed while holding a door open for fellow students fleeing the gunmen. His funeral was held later on Monday.
Wall Street tribute
Earlier, traders on Wall Street broke off from the start of their normally frenetic business for a minute's silence in memory of the victims.
It has emerged that the parents on of the gunmen, 17-year old Dylan Klebold, sensed "tension" in their son several days before the attack.
Reports in Monday's New York Times quote family pastor, the Reverend Don Marxhausen, as saying Dylan's mother, Susan, told him that she suspected something had been bothering her son as he left for school on the morning of the attack.
"The goodbye had an edge to it," she told the pastor. "She thought, maybe he's in a bad mood. Maybe he's got a test today or something."

The Edge of Malibu
Josh Grossberg You might say The Edge is having boundary issues.
The U2 guitarist's plans to build five mountaintop mansions in Malibu with fantastic oceanside views is facing fierce opposition from some famous NIMBYs concerned the homes will be an environmental catastrophe.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the proposed project would be built above homes belonging to the likes of Dick Van Dyke, Kelsey Grammer and James Cameron and would require some extensive and tricky engineering, including extension of a road down a rugged elevation, grading 70,000 cubic yards of hillside and installing water lines.
"The downside of this is a permanently scarred mountainside for the benefit of a very few that for many years all will view," Jefferson Wagner, a Malibu councilman, told the newspaper. "For somebody so revered even to be orchestrating this type of development in such a sensitive area is hypocritical."
The Edge, whose real name is David Evans, promises development on the properties will address those concerns with care.
"My family and I love Malibu, having maintained a residence here for more than a decade," he told the Times. "These homes will be some of the most environmentally sensitive ever designed in Malibu—or anywhere in the world. I'm disappointed that certain critics either don't have the facts or have ulterior motives."
The Grammy-winning Rock and Roll Hall of Famer has "certificates of compliance" from Los Angeles County establishing that the land he owns meets all legal requirements.
Edge added that he and Irish real estate investor Derek Quinlan plan to take up residence in two of the homes and most likely flip the other three, which has rankled some neighbors whose peace and quiet will be rattled by all the building.
The California Coastal Commission is expected to review the environmental impact of the project in June.
This is not the first fight Evans has found himself in with neighbors.
He and the rest of U2 came under fire in their hometown of Dublin for now defunct plans to build the so-called U2 Tower, a proposed skyscraper in the heart of the city that would've been the tallest in Ireland. Preservationists claimed the $220 million project would have resulted in the tearing down of four adjacent historic buildings.}
